Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual practice that combines meditation and gentle exercises with a moral philosophy centered on the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. Introduced in China in 1992, it quickly gained a large following.
In Australia, Falun Gong was first introduced in 1995. Following lectures by its founder, Li Hongzhi, in Sydney in 1996 and 1999, the practice grew in popularity, attracting people from various backgrounds. For a few years, Falun Gong was practiced freely in Australia without any issues.
However, after the Chinese government initiated a nationwide crackdown on Falun Gong in 1999, the situation changed. Falun Gong practitioners in Australia have since become a vocal community, engaging in various activities to raise awareness about the persecution of their fellow practitioners in China. These activities often include public protests, demonstrations, and educational efforts to inform the public and government officials about the human rights abuses are being committed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Some of these events have included re-enacting torture methods used in China.
The Falun Dafa Association of Australia operates as a charitable organization, with branches in different states. Its activities, as described in its submissions to the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), include promoting the spiritual practice, holding exercise and meditation classes, and raising awareness about the persecution in China. The community also plays a role in promoting the Shen Yun performing arts company, which aims to revive traditional Chinese culture.
Over the years, the Falun Gong community in Australia has made submissions to various parliamentary committees, including those on foreign influence and sanctions. In these submissions, they have raised concerns about the CCP’s attempts to interfere with their activities and have provided information on the persecution of practitioners in China. The community has also reported incidents of harassment and abuse at public events, which they attribute to pro-CCP individuals.

Australia: “State Organs” Film Screening Moves Attendees
“The theater was full yet it was so quiet, because the audience had a hard time believing that something like this is still happening. To persecute people for their belief is not acceptable anywhere. People should have the right to choose what they believe. There is nothing wrong with Falun Gong’s principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance, and to persecute them is a horrible crime,” said Olayinka Quadr, a British film producer, after watching the movie State Organs in Toronto.
The recent conversation between Chinese leader Xi and Russian President Putin about living to 150 through organ transplants was caught on a hot mic and sparked worldwide discussion. One Internet user said, “So it’s true that there’s an organ bank in China, and Falun Gong practitioners have been telling us the truth!” The film State Organs is currently being shown in theaters in multiple countries. The documentary exposes the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) crime of systematic organ harvesting from living Falun Gong practitioners who are incarcerated for not renouncing their faith. The movie was screened in Sydney, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; Omiya, Japan; and Nitra, Slovakia. From late August to early September this year, it was aired in Canada during the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, and at the Balwyn Library in Melbourne, Australia. As the movie is being played around the globe, more and more people are waking up and realize that state-sanctioned live organ harvesting in China is really happening. After watching the film many people say they admired practitioners’ persistent efforts in the past 26 years to raise public awareness on the issue despite the persecution.
Sydney, Australia: Member of Parliament Praises Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance for Being Humanity’s Foundation Stone
A celebration was held at Chatswood’s main street in Sydney on July 27, 2025. Local residents and elected officials spoke about the meaningful contribution Falun Gong (Falun Dafa) practitioners make to the multicultural social fabric of Australia, by sharing the benefits of the spiritual practice and the power of its moral teachings.
State Member of Parliament for New South Wales, Tim James, mentioned in his speech how he first met Falun Gong practitioners 25 years ago when he worked in the office of former Prime Minister John Howard. He described Falun Gong as “A beautiful spiritual movement.”
He continued, “How practitioners are treated in China is something we denounce. In Australia, we believe in freedom of belief, freedom of thought, freedom of expression, and freedom of association. These are the fundamental human freedoms that have underpinned Western civilization, and indeed our modern world. Without freedom, we as people cannot flourish, we cannot live our most fulfilled lives.
“I want to say to everyone in the Falun Gong community right across Chatswood, Willoughby, New South Wales, and Australia, you are welcome, you are appreciated, and we thank you for your gentleness, your Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. If we do not have truth in this world, we do not have anything. That surely is a foundation stone. Compassion, to give of yourself, to give to others, to be charitable, that is so important in our world today. And forbearance, to be selfless, to be thoughtful, to be merciful, the world absolutely needs more forbearance. Those fundamental tenets of Falun Gong are so important, so valued, and indeed very welcome in our city and right across our country.”
Willoughby City Councilor Michelle Chuang said in her speech that Falun Gong, “Is more than a traditional Chinese spiritual practice. It is a way of life rooted in the universal principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance; Zhen, Shan Ren. These values are not only deeply meaningful in Chinese culture, but they also speak to the shared hopes of people across the world.
“Today’s event is a celebration of these principles expressed through art, music, meditation, and community. It is a chance to reflect on the importance of inner peace in an increasingly busy world, and the strength that comes from living with integrity and kindness.
“To the Falun Gong community, thank you for sharing your culture, your values, and your resilience.
“Let us continue to stand for harmony, human dignity, and the right of every individual to live in Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance.”

Australia: Introducing Falun Gong at a Community Event
Falun Dafa practitioners participated in the HOTA Hawker Twilight Market on July 12, 2025. Their booth drew many visitors. They demonstrated the Falun Dafa (also known as Falun Gong) exercises and introduced the spiritual practice to the public.
The community event featured an open-air food market consisting of 150 food stalls with flavors from all over the world, unique handmade products, and artists performing fire shows, stilts and Chinese lion dances, all displayed under colorful lanterns. Sydney, Australia: Rally to Protest the Chinese Regime’s 26-Year-Long Persecution of Falun Gong
Falun Gong practitioners and supporters held a rally in front of the Sydney Town Hall on July 17, 2025, to protest the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) 26-year-long persecution.
Elected officials and other invited guests commended practitioners for their courage and perseverance in safeguarding freedom of belief and peacefully protesting the persecution. They called on the Australian Government to pay attention to China’s human rights issues and take action to urge the CCP stop the persecution and transnational repression of Falun Gong (also known as Falun Dafa).

Professor David Flint observed that Falun Gong was reviving the Chinese people’s traditional values and beliefs, which the CCP sought to destroy for decades.
He referred to an order from Jiang Zemin, the former head of the CCP: “Bankrupt them financially, ruin their reputations, and destroy them physically.”
Professor Flint said, “It is disgraceful—a government ordering that their citizens be destroyed physically. That’s a shocking thing.”
He noted, “China’s leaders are all millionaires; they are all very rich… In destroying them [practitioners] physically, the communists decided that they should make a profit from the destruction of Falun Gong, so they decided to sell off their organs, livers and hearts, and set up a trade for organs-on-demand.
“It is not a government in China. It is a criminal enterprise.”
Professor Flint expressed hope that the Australian government will actually do something in relation to China and the Chinese people who are suffering under the CCP.
