Falun Gong in Indonesia

Key points about Falun Gong in Indonesia include:

  • Human Rights Concerns: Falun Gong practitioners in Indonesia have reported human rights violations, including the dismissal of peaceful acts and the arrest and detention of practitioners.
  • Unofficial Status: A government directive in Indonesia has instructed regional officials not to accept Falun Gong for registration as an organization, and to monitor its activities. This has led to what some have described as a state of “tolerated but not legal” existence for the group.
  • Persecution in China: Many of the public activities held by Falun Gong in Indonesia are peaceful protests against the persecution of practitioners in mainland China by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
  • Community Activities: Despite the challenges, Falun Gong practitioners in Indonesia continue to hold public activities, including group meditation and performances, such as the Waist Drum dance. They are often seen practicing in public spaces, such as beaches and parks.
  • Diverse Membership: The Indonesian Falun Gong community is diverse, and some reports have noted that it includes Muslim members, highlighting the practice’s non-denominational nature.
